Location
The photo was taken in Dolomites, Italy. I was next to Giau Pass in Cortina d'Ampezzo area where there are a famous periodical waterpool.Time
This photo was taken after midnight, the moon was up in the sky and very bright behind me. I usually dont like to take pictures in summer with moonlight, but in this case colors of rocks (Dolomia) is perfect for this kind of night photography, as well as full moon shots during winter in the Alps.Lighting
This is a long exposures composed by a multiple 30 seconds shots for a total of 20 minutes timing. Every shot was stitched using star trails software and with a particular effects that allowed me to get this path-result very similar to a comet trail. Reflection on the water surface is absolutely not retouched and represents seven stars of Ursa Major.Equipment
My equipment at that time was : Canon EOS 5D Mark III with Zeiss 15mm Distagon for Canon. Tripod Manfrotto.Inspiration
I was in Cadore for a job for a famous italian magazine and that night I decided to spent 2 hours drive to reach that location that I only photographed during the day some years before. So I would like to obtain a star trail effect on a very clear night but i didnt have the time to reach a lake hiking too much cause the morning before I had to wake up very early for the sunrise.Editing
Yes of course. I prepared each photos with lightroom and then I export all of them and put in Startrail.exe software to obtain the result you can see here. not so much processing. In my camera bag
I usually have my camera and two lenses, a wide angle and a tele lens that I dont really us so much. More batteries cause photographing during the night you can have bad experience. I allways have with me an Iphone with different useful app related to photography, for example Photo Pills and Sky Walk but also to surf the web during long exposures :DFeedback
First of all start taking pictures like this in situation not far from the car or from home, just to try a first approach. After this maybe choose some non-iconic location to obtain a beautiful result on a not too known place or maybe you will finish to realize the same shot of someone else.
