Location
This photo is a combination of two images. The first image (the portrait) was taken against a brick wall in New York City. The second image (the landscape) was taken in an abandoned ghost town in Terlingua, Texas. I wanted to combine the city and desert.Time
Both images were taken in the afternoon with the ideal lighting conditions.Lighting
The lighting was perfect. It was a sunny day but not too bright. No harsh shadows!Equipment
For both images I used a Sony RX-100 camera with no flash or tripod.Inspiration
I have seen many double exposures recently and I wanted to experiment with it as well. I love how the portrait balances out the landscape to enhance the mood of the image.Editing
Yes, most of the image was created in post-processing. I overlaid the images and then experimented with the opacity of both layers to ensure that they balanced each other effectively. In order to bring attention to the model's face I raised her opacity layer above everything else.In my camera bag
I almost always have at least one camera with me, but if I know I'm traveling somewhere with great photo opportunities I am known to bring up to 3. I always have my Sony RX-100 and then I will bring my Nikon D80 as well as a film camera. And of course, I'll always take a few shots on my phone to make sure I am covered on Instagram and other social media sites.Feedback
My advice is always to look at other successful images to see if you can use elements in your personal design. After watch True Detective and seeing the amazing opening scene I knew I wanted to work with a portrait and a landscape image. Make sure to choose two strong images so that they can balance each other out. It is always helpful to maintain the same color palette so that there are not any distracting elements. Experiment, experiment, experiment!
