Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a park near a lake where there is hardly any tree coverage. A decent amount of foliage, some paved surfaces and a decent size lake.

Time

This was taken on August 4 in the mid afternoon.

Lighting

I was really aiming for a certain look for this project as a whole so I had to pick a day and time of day that worked both for the sunshine that wouldn't overpower either the subject's view or the view coming into the camera lens. It worked out every well for the bright vibrancy of the daytime with minimal cloud cover. The sun was low enough to create shadows when and where I needed them.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS Rebel T2i with a standard 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

I had been working on creating a few projects for myself to build up my portfolio and have images work work with in the process. Some were fairly basic, but this project was one I was really looking forward to because it gave me more of a creative feel for it. I could take the images and push them a little more for the look that I wanted, but still keep a lot of the original intact. This particular image was taken on the first day of the project and I just really liked how the environment around us made the already vibrancy of her blue eyes even brighter.

Editing

For this particular image I did very minimal and very basic editing. I knew what I wanted to do with this image as soon it was uploaded into the program so I adjusted the brightness as a whole, then masked it in a black and white layer and created the color pop just on her eyes since that was the focus of the image. I turned up the vibrancy in the blue just a touch to make it stand out just a little more, and then sharpened it.

In my camera bag

For my camera bag, almost everything stays in there so that it's mostly ready to grab and go except to check my camera battery charge and make sure I have a usable SD card. I keep my extra lenses in my bag, my flash with extra batteries, hand sanitizer and chapstick at all times and I also store my battery charger for my camera as well so that I know exactly where to look for it. I also like to try to make sure that I have some other items in my bag like a link roller, a lens cloth cleaner, some business cards and a pen. Sometimes those things run out before I realize I don't have them. For longer sessions, especially weddings where they take up most of the day, I also make sure to pack pain relievers and antacids, bandaids, safety pins, water and light snack and gum.

Feedback

To capture and image like this one is really simple. Lighting is key for this so pick a location where you can get good overall lighting and possibly something to reflect light on the subject's face. The image was taken in close proximity to the subject and taken from a slight downward angle where the subject was angled more downward and the face turned upward just slightly. Variations of this are also possible with more of the subject's face in view as well as the opposite where there is less of the subject's face.
