Marl reef at Green Lakes State Park, Onondaga County, New York, USA, early September (Labor Day weekend). Cyanobacteria precipitate calcium carbonate from dissolved limestone to form the "reefs" around the edge. The bacteria also give the water its characteristic blue-green color. Northern white cedars like the alkaline environment and grow around the edge of the lake.
