Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in my Home studio in Malone, NY. I have my degree in Photography and my studies were focused on Still Life and Fine Art Photography.

Time

This image was taken in the middle of the night while my family was sleeping. When working on my Still Life work I love working in the middle of the night when it is silent and I can just focus on the image that I am making at the moment, I spend a good amount of the time talking to myself and messaging with my best friends who are also photographers to see if they see a mistake in my setups before I get too invested in one particular set up.

Lighting

I wanted this to feel like an old print, I used Alien Bee lights placed on either side of the subject and on the background to get good even exposure of the image but slightly underexposed to limit the amount of highlights and to give it a moodier feel.

Equipment

This image was shot with a Canon 6D, 100mm Macro lens, a MeFoto tri-pod, and alien bee's strobe lights. To hold the spoons I used mini booms with clamps to hold the spoons in the exact place and angle needed to get the shot right, and white seamless paper for the background.

Inspiration

I was working on a series of liquids and showing how they flow, and came across a series where a photographer had poured honey over people, I did not want to use honey, so I used local Maple syrup to tie the image back to where I live right now (Malone, NY) to give it more of a local charm, and still keep it with in my series of liquids.

Editing

All of my Still Life photos get a bit of Post-Processing. I added a bit of age to the photo by using some filters and glass overlays to give it the vintage look that I was going for. Adjusted the color temperature to add to the aged look, and sharpened the image a bit to add a little more hardness to the overall image.

In my camera bag

When shooting still life I almost always reach for My Canon 6D and 100mm 2.8 macro lens. I almost always use my MeFoto tripod so that my camera can stay in the same position while I make all of my adjustments.

Feedback

Patience is key, taking the time to set up your lighting to create the shadows and contrast that are pleasing to your eye and vision. Be ready with plenty of syrup or other liquid on hand to do this shot over and over as it will often take several tries to get the image that is exactly what you want, from how the liquid is flowing to how you want the lighting. Take some setup shots before using the liquid to dial in your lighting, but still be prepared to change it after the first shot. Still Life photography take a lot of set up time and often very little shooting time, but it is almost always worth all of the hard work! It also takes a lot of trial and error to get everything to flow just the way you want it to.
