Behind The Lens

Location

I made this photograph in Vacaville, atop a hill that I use for family photos and other portraits for client work.

Time

This image was taken about an hour before sunset. The idea was to achieve Gold lighting to go with the Golden grass and subject.

Lighting

I love the way the light grazes all the grass bringing out the details you would not get otherwise. I used a gold reflector to add to her coloring along with a bit of fill light. (speed light)

Equipment

I used the Nikon D3 with a Nikon SB-700 speed light. My lens is the Nikon 70-200. I also like to use reflectors.

Inspiration

Every time I go out to this area it is for a family, engagement or a portraiture shoot for a client. I always see the tall grass and have always wanted to use it for me. So when I was given the chance I styled this shoot with my niece and created images for me and her family to enjoy.

Editing

I don't usually do a lot of post processing on my portraits aside from white balance and exposures.

In my camera bag

When I shoot portraits, I typically carry a speed light, my D3, my 50mm lens, my 70-200mm lens as well as my reflectors and even some led flashlights.

Feedback

If you want to create an image like this, It really does depend on time of day. You want the details of the grass defined by how the light grazes it. Also, make sure to balance the sunlight to your lights and reflectors. An assistant can be a big help, especially when working with little ones.
