Location
The photo was taken in The New Forest, England. It was my first time to use a 17mm wide angle lens to capture an early autumn scene with my two children playing on a swing.Time
I remember this photo very well as it was taken on my 11th anniversary on 18 Oct 2014 which I took my family to the New Forest for a special anniversary lunch. It was in the autumn and the weather has started to get colder. We had a walk around after the meal and saw this big tree. Both of my children loved the swing and played for a long time giving me an opportunity to capture the memory. We had a lovely time in the restaurant and this photo has been printed large and was hung in our living room for over 2 years.Lighting
The sun was low casting the big tree shadow on the grass. It was late afternoon so the light was warm. Leaves on the tree have started to turn orange which showing the sign of Autumn.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 6D with an 17-40mm f/4.0 lens. It was taken hand held.Inspiration
I wanted to capture the memory celebrating the 11th anniversary. With my two children playing on the swing, I can show how big and beautiful the oak tree was. The New Forest is a great place for photography especially during the autumn time with golden leaves.Editing
Some burning and dodging were applied on the Sky and on the oak tree to highlight the leaves. White balance was corrected to show the correct temperature matching with what I was as an autumn sceneIn my camera bag
I always have the Canon 50mm f/1.4 prime with me. I will then switch between the Canon 24-105mm f/4 or Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 depends on if I need to take wide angle or zoomed shots. I liked to challenge myself so I will try to use both wide angle and zoomed even for the same landscape scene if it meant I had to go back again. I also like Macro photography so it is not uncommon to bring my old Canon 100mm f/2.8 lens for flowers and insects. Sometimes, I will bring my Canon 430EX II flash when I need to shoot indoor for portrait or birthday party.Feedback
The New Forest is an amazing place for photographers. There are numerous places with good scenes for photography including water streams, sunset, wild animals, fungi, old trees, stars etc. Different time of the day / different weather represent different perspectives of the forest. I love to go to the forest with my friend Sean walking his dog and spot something new.
