Behind The Lens

Location

The photo of Charlie was taken on Kessingland beach near Lowestoft, Suffolk, U.K. The most easterly part of the U.K.

Time

2pm in the afternoon

Lighting

It was quite a bright, cloudy day which helped to give some diffused lighting.

Equipment

Hand held as Charlie was moving around and photograph was taken using Canon 450D and Canon 70-300mm lens

Inspiration

The photo of Charlie was taken on Kessingland beach near Lowestoft, Suffolk, U.K. I was taking photos of him for a friend and Charlie is her nephew. Charlie was moving around an hiding behind some rocks on the beach so I zoomed in with the 70-300mm and tried to get a close crop. He had wonderful blue eyes and I wanted to capture that most of all.

Editing

Adobe camera RAW and photoshop CS6 to convert to mono and crop slightly.

In my camera bag

Canon 450D Camera with Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6, Canon 50mm 1.8 and Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6. Canon 430 EX flashgun

Feedback

The day we went to take some photos was pre-arranged so I had to cope with whatever light was available. Luckily I got some bright, diffused sunlight otherwise I may have needed to use flash to lighten any shadows or to brighten up a dull day. The photos taken were not posed but natural as Charlie was playing on the beach.
