Location
The photo was set up in my studio, in Downtown SacramentoTime
I believe this one was done about mid-day. I have shot a few of these for my series, lol so time is not really a relative thing.Lighting
The lighting is really simple! Its a two light system. I use two 400 wt monolights with a softbox on one, and a beauty dish on the other. The diffusers don't really need to be anything specific, 2 medium sized soft boxes would've worked the same. They were set up behind the model back along side the backdrop and wall, both angled towards the model and I think we shot it at about 1/4 power. Its complete back lighting that wraps around her.Equipment
For this one is used a 24-70 2.8 lens on a crop framed camera. At first I was using a tripod, but I wanted to be able to move and change spots to experiment with the lighting and timing of the shot. The 2 400 wt strobes had diffusers on them, and I also used 2 black flags as gobos (between my camera and the light) so that none of the light would flash and spill into the camera. The backdrop was a roll of black seamless.Inspiration
I had felt like I was in a creative rut, and looking for inspiration, I turned to the internet. There I had seen something similar where a guy was throwing, what looked like baby powder, at a model while she dance. So I thought about how to make it a little different, and I decided that flour would be thicker and get the clouds of dust I wanted. And we decided, instead of throwing it at the model, why cant we coat her in flour and then when she makes jumps and quick flicks, it would go everywhere!Editing
Believe it or not, but very little post-processing was done! The lighting created this incredible effect when it hit the flour and made the photo better than we could've even imagined! The post work was simply to color correct and white balance. And I added just a slight hint more of black to the shot.In my camera bag
My bag usually has my 2 bodies, a nikon d7100, and my new d610. Lenses are my 50 1.4, 35 1.8, 24-70 2.8, and the 70-200 2.8. I have a few flashes, wireless triggers, extra batteries, and a battery grip. All that fits in my small carry-on bag I made.Feedback
Cover EVERYTHING in plastic! You have no idea how messy it is! The first time we did it, we were cleaning, not only the floors, but the walls, and ceiling for weeks! Save your self the headache and buy some plastic painting tarps, that way you can roll it all up and toss them afterwards
