Location
This photo was taken at Anchorage Alaska's potters marsh. I admit it is an unassuming name for one of the premier birding spots in an amazing state.Time
Summer time in Alaska means I cannot just say 5 pm.. If I was in the 48 contiguous states it would be the equivalent of three of 3 o'clock.Lighting
The best part was that the normal light on the horizontal plane was terrible. So if you are not seeing anything inspiring change your perspective.Equipment
This was taken with a Nikon D5100 and a 50 - 300 mm lens handheld without a flash or tripod.Inspiration
The arctic turn is a wicked fast bird and hard to shoot, but they will hover facing in to the wind for just a moment as they spot their pray (small fish). At that moment they look like some sort angel.Editing
The one weakness of Nikon in my book is richness of color so I have to boost the saturation if I want to match reality. In my camera bag
I have yet to buy a lot of gear so my bag is simple. Camera body, 18 - 50 mm lens, 50 - 300 mm lens, polarizing filter, cleaning supplies and a junk store tripod.Feedback
Turns are not easy, you WILL need to take a lot of exposures to get one that you like. This shot needed a clear day and for the sun to be high in the sky. Use a wide aperture on your best telephoto lens and as fast a shutter as possible with a 200 or less ISO.
