Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo just outside our loft in the design district of downtown dallas. Most everyone assumes that I was in an airplane or very high up when I took this shot and are always surprised when I explain that I was at street level just walking around. The loft where we lived was positioned facing due west, and the way the area is zoned, there wasn't a structure taller than 5 stories, so there was nothing blocking my view from the loft (on the 5th floor) or from standing on the ground floor. it was a unique situation and the year that we lived there was when I captured almost every storm or sunset shot that I have in my portfolio. Since moving from that loft, I haven't seen the sky open up the way it did there.

Time

This photo was taken on May 23, 2009 around 4pm. The temperature had dropped slightly due to the cold front moving in and I remember that there was a lot of traffic buzzing around me thanks to rush hour in downtown Dallas.

Lighting

It was overcast, which I love to shoot in because I like the contrast and I find it easy to work in. I also love the way an overcast day makes me feel emotionally - more happy than sad.

Equipment

The camera I used was my good ole Nikon CoolPix E8800 (the high end of the consumer point and shoot cameras) lol. The one thing I will say about that camera is this: it was all I could afford for a long time.... and I knew that camera inside and out and I could change the settings on it in total darkness - and I pushed that camera to it's limits and milked it for everything it was worth! I guess I proved to myself that I could make anything work for me, regardless of perceived limitations. Work what you have with pride and never be ashamed of the tools you have available to you.

Inspiration

I have always been drawn to cloudscapes, sunsets, storms and anything else going on in the sky, most often in awe with my mouth hanging open. Considering the area where we lived, there was ALWAYS something amazing going on in the sky..... all I had to do was to be ready with my camera and be willing to drop everything to run and capture whatever god had laid out on his canvas for us to see.

Editing

The only post processing I do is cropping and checking the light exposure and removing any unwanted clutter that was left in the shot via photoshop or Aperture.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D7000 and 2 extra charged batteries along with my beautiful, black lab companion - Ella Fitzgerald Page

Feedback

Know your equipment - inside and out and go after (with all your heart) whatever it is that moves you and figure it out, until it looks right to you.
