Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this outside our local library! The entire right wall is white and it’s ideal if you want clean minimalistic images when you can’t afford a studio.

Time

This was likely early afternoon — honestly, it’s been so long that I can’t remember, but I know we prayed for clouds on that day so the lighting would be more even.

Lighting

Seriously, overcast days are a blessing. Obviously if you want a nice shot against the sky it doesn’t always carry the same dramatic effect but it’s perfect if you want diffused lighting for headshots and simple portraits like this one.

Equipment

Just me and my trusty 50mm prime lens! I’ve got nothing against all the gadgets that make so many gorgeous photos possible, but I’m a simple person at heart.

Inspiration

Amanda (our model) was in need of some portfolio shots and I love her look, so obliging was no question. Just look at that hair!

Editing

I use Lightroom for all of my post-processing. I tend not to change too much — like with makeup, I like to enhance what’s already there.

In my camera bag

This was shot with a Nikon D200 and a nifty fifty, but I currently enjoy the company of a Nikon D700 and a 35mm prime.

Feedback

Your model is just as important as your artistic process. Make sure they’re comfortable and the photos will come much more easily once they are. Want a cute smiling shot? Just make ‘em laugh!
