While on a boat ride in the Monterey Bay off the California coast, my wife and I saw a nice pod of Risso’s dolphins not far from the harbor. These are definitely different critters than the bottlenose dolphin most folks are familiar with. They dive very deep in search of a meal, well over 1000 feet at times. I gather this makes Monterey Canyon, the deep trench that travels beneath the bay, just the type of place they like to feed. Their bodies get quite scarred up from “teeth raking” between them as well as some battle scars from things like squid they like to eat. This gives them quite an interesting look, almost as if they have graffiti all over them.
This one grabbed a breath fairly close alongside the boat.
