Location
I took this photo in a rural part of Santa Clarita, CA. The senior, Devon, wanted to take some images with her horse. I took this outside near where her horse was boarded.Time
I don’t remember the exact time, but I do remember the shoot beginning about an hour before sunset.Lighting
I had an flash (off camera) fitted with a shoot-through umbrella and a wireless remote on a stand left of camera. I loved her hat, and worked to light her face below the hat.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5D MK II and an 85mm F 1.8 lens. The flash was Canon too.Inspiration
I set up a Pinterest mood board with the senior and her mother. They picked out several images they liked and we worked together to meet their wishes.Editing
I made some minor tweaks in Lightroom and a little touch up in Photoshop. Nothing major. In my camera bag
I now shoot with the Canon 5D Mk IV. My favorite portrait lens is the 85mm F1.4L - love that focal length. I usually bring a 24-105 F4.0L for wider shots and probably a 50mm 1.4. If I’m shooting 1 person the 85mm probably will stay on the camera. I usually bring a large reflector (and an assistant - usually my lovely wife ????) I’ll also bring a flash that I may use off camera. Oh yeah, EXTRA BATTERIES TOO!Feedback
Work closely with your client to see what they like. Pay attention to your settings and take lots of images. I don’t “spray and pray” but I do take many images. Good luck and keep shooting!
