Location
There is a wonderful old railroad bed near my home, the former Wellsville-Arcade-Galeton line, that is now the WAG Trail. It runs alongside the Genesee River and I hike it often with my dogs.Time
I try to be on the trail shortly after sunrise in the summer, since that’s when the wildlife is active. This was around 8am in July when it is not unusual to cross paths with does and their fawns on their way for drink before bedding down for the day.Lighting
The way the sun shines through the dense riverbank foliage makes for some dramatic and absolutely stunning lighting. I never feel equal to the task of reproducing it in my photos.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon EOS T6 with the 70-300mm kit lens.Inspiration
She was framed so prettily by the foliage along the trail and the light was magical so I snapped away.Editing
Yes, I do adjust color and light in Lightroom but I’m a novice. In my camera bag
I always have my 55-200mm lens, which is great for a wide range of subjects, and I usually take a 100mm or 35mm macro lens in case I see something tiny and cool.Feedback
If you want to capture wildlife images, you have to be up early and get familiar with their routines and locales. They will get used to you if you’re around often enough. Just be ready to shoot at all times and keep your head on a swivel so you don’t miss it.
