Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken with a DJI Mavic 2 pro drone flying over top of Elbow Falls in the Alberta rocky mountains in Canada.

Time

This photo was taken in the afternoon after a full day of school, when I decided to go for a drive in the mountains to clear my mind, and took the drone up for a test flight over the falls. The afternoon sun perfetly lit up the falls, amplifing the beautiful blue water and the yellow tint of the rocks below the water.

Lighting

I wanted the photo to show the stunning contrast between the bright blue water, and the yellow hue or the rocks surrounding the top of the falls.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a DJI Mavic 2 pro drone, no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I initially wasnt very inspired to take this photo, I was simply out in the mountains hoping to learn to fly my drone better and came accross this beautiful landscape. After taking several dozen short videos and other photo from all around the waterfall and surrounding areas, I thought it would be fun to fly the drone straight up very high, and look down, and it turned out the water and stones looked so much brighter and more beautiful from that angle and so I finally line dup the shot that i wanted at a lower elevation centred over the falls and fell in love with the composition created by this angle.

Editing

I did minimal editing of this image, however I did slightly tweak some things on the raw image to perfect the exposure and white balance.

In my camera bag

I normally have my drone (dJI Mavic 2 pro) as well as my Canon 80d, canon 24-105 f/4, and canon 100-400 f/4, various neutral density filters, a tripod, lens cleaning accessories, and extra batteries to keep taking photos all day long.

Feedback

When flying a drone in the mountains it is all about weather, because no matter how good of a pilot you are, if it is too windy, or poorly lit, the photos will not turn out regardless, so finding a nice day with your intended lighting, and low wind, will give you the greatest chance for success.
