Behind The Lens

Location

In expanding my my understanding of light, this photograph was taken in my small home studio.

Time

When ever I am wishing to use natural light in studio, I tend to shoot prior to noon as my large window is an Eastern exposure. That way I can control the intensity or diffusion with more control.

Lighting

As this image was for a leading lines study, I was looking for a way to enhance the lines of the coffee beans. I utilized the natural light coming in from my window and achieved the back lighting using a gold reflector. In order to have the reflector light enhanced, an ND8 filter was used in conjunction with a 15 second long exposure.

Equipment

The camera is a Nikon D3300 with a Nikkor 50mm prime lens with a Hoya ND8 filter. This is a top down supported on a Cameron tripod, gold reflector from a 5-in-one, light was also negated with black bristol board to help shape where light was falling. The camera was triggered with a Neewer NW-880 intervalometer.

Inspiration

I have been enjoying exploring food photography and coffee is one of my great passions (and addictions). I try to find different ways to capture this love of coffee that I have.

Editing

The post processing software used in all my images as of late 2019 is CaptureOne Pro 2 and the NIK Collection suit; RAW Sharpening, Dfine and ColourFX.

In my camera bag

When I walk out the door for a basic camera walk, the camera is my Nikon D3300, Nikkor 50mm lens, various Hoya filters, batteries, memory cards, Nikon ML-L3 wireless trigger, lens pen and lint free cloth, cell phone for notes etc, various props (fairy lights, steel wool, plastic gems, various action figures and toys). There will most times also be Hot Paws hand warmers, compass, emergency fire lighting etc. If I think or plan on wild life images, a Nikkor 55-300mm lens is included. When the big hikes come about for landscape and wildlife; bear spray, Garmin GPS, topographical maps, inReach satellite communications as well as food and water for the trek. I have various bags and packs depending on equipment or adventure that is ahead. At times you may also find a Nikon D5000 that I have converted to a pin-hole camera. The current tripod for my bag is a Koolehaoda KQ-999 tripod.

Feedback

The only real advice I can give for a studio shoot while playing with light, and this will also apply for photo walks, is just play. Experiment and see what happens. You don't know till you try. And keep notes of some form about the image so if a shot works or captures what your see, you will be able to do it again and again. There are no mistakes other than the image you didn't take. Point, shoot, adjust, repeat. And always have fun.
