Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Banff,AB during our family vacation. Our plan was to drive from Banff to Jasper and take pictures along the way. But due to some reasons we had to abandoned the plan almost half way to Jasper and had to drive back to Banff. I was pretty disappointed that things didn’t go according to planned and it was on our way back that we came across the view.

Time

It was taken around 5:30 PM. The view came from no where as it was right after a curve.

Lighting

In Banff during summer, sunset is at around 10 PM. So at the time I took this picture sunlight was still harsh. In order to compensate that I used graduated ND filter and bracketing functionality in my camera. Since I was standing in middle of pretty busy highway,I didn’t have the luxury of using tripod.

Equipment

This was shot on Nikon D750 camera with 24-70mm f2.8 lens. I also used Graduated ND filters as sky was very bright .

Inspiration

I am a self taught photographer and there are many photographers that i follow in ViewBug. My inspiration came from many of those pictures posted in VB.

Editing

Since I shoots in RAW, post processing is always required. Also since sunlight was harsh at the time I took this picture I had to take five pictures with different exposures(all handheld) and then had to combine those into one picture using photoshop.

In my camera bag

I carry a pretty heavy bag :-). In it I have Nikon D750, 16-35 f4, 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 - all Nikon lenses. You would also see 3 ND filters (3, 6 and 10 stops), polarizer and soft-Edge graduated ND filters in my bag

Feedback

Well if you are going to take straight road pictures, there is nothing more important that your safety- since most likely you will be standing in middle of road. So if that is the case, it is better to have someone to keep an eye on incoming traffic as you take picture. Besides that, when it comes to landscape photography remember the 3 Ps. Plan, patience and post-processing.
