Location
I am an amateur and I was keen to use my Nikon 5300 that I had purchased especially for the trip to Glenelg , a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia on the St Vincent Gulf. I knew that the sunset would be photographic due to the clouds and originally wanted to shoot on the pier itself but it was crowded with a lot of photographers with tripods and lots of gear.Time
So I resorted to the beach and to my surprise I was the only one under the pier. This gave me the perfect opportunity to take a myriad of photos from various angles and gave me the opportunity to play with the camera settings to see what it could do. Photos were taken from 5.30 to 6.00pm in March. (Late summer in Australia)Lighting
I looked at the results of each photo and although I was capturing the cloud colors I found the brightness of the sun direct was washing out the photo. I did not have any filters so I used the pier itself to block the direct light which in turn gave me filtered lighting and the silhouette of the pier and people but retained the colour.Equipment
Nikon D5300, Kit Lens 18.0-55.0mm. Exposure 1/250sec, f/10: ISO1600 ( No flash or tripod)Inspiration
It is very hard to capture a sunset over water in Australia and I had seen photos taken at this location and always wanted to capture my own interperation to see if I could equal the professionals.Editing
No post processing was usedIn my camera bag
I have now become very comfortable with the Nikon D5300 and still learning. I still like the 18-55mm lens but now also carry NIKON DX VR AF-S 18-140mm which gives great landscape images and I have only just sarted to experiment with filters and tripod.Feedback
Sunsets and Sunrise in Australia can be spectacular due to the clarity of the air and the intensity of the sun. Add some cloud and you will be amazed
