This photo was taken from North Head towards Mount Victoria in Devonport, Auckland as part of the My Auckland photo competition that I never got around to doing anything with, let alone submitting to the actual competition!Time
After spending the better part of the afternoon with varying qualities of light from bad to worse. I was about to give up and go home when golden hour arrived about 4pm and the clouds parted enough to give the valley an almost Middle Earth qualityLighting
I kept the sunlight behind the pohutakawa to give the scene a lightsource that wasn't going to blow out the highlights while still give that warm glow and light the grass in the foreground slightly. I wanted to keep the haze and glow as natural as possible rather than rely on post to give the effect I wanted.Equipment
Taken on a Nikon D5300 with a Nikkor 18-140mm lens.Inspiration
I was heading back to the car after a disappointing afternoon shooting for a photo competition that I never got around to entering. As I came around the side of the hill, I was presented with this scene. I was so taken by the angle of the sun, and the subtle rays formed by the cloud shapes that lit the valley in the most alluring, warm glow. To me, this was one of those moments you hear other photographers talk about, the shot they got after a bad days shooting that made the whole day worthwhile.Editing
I processed the RAW image in Lightroom with very little change to the original image other than adjusting the framing and bringing out the colours and the warmth. By adjusting the temperature, saturation and clarity I was able to achieve the image as I visualised it.In my camera bag
At the time of shooting, my kit was very minimal consisting of the Nikon D5300, Nikkor 18-140mm lens, and a tripod. I've now graduated to a more rounded kit but by no means complete (isn't that always the case with us photographers, there's always that next purchase!) that now includes a Nikkor 35mm lens, carbon fibre tripod, filters consisting of ND, CPL etc. And of course, lens cleaning equipment to ensure I always get a clean shot!Feedback
You can plan everything to the last detail but in the end, when you're shooting outside, you're at the mercy of the elements. This was the one gem I came away with from the whole day and it wasn't planned at all. Sometimes you just have to be patient and realise that not every shoot is going to go your way.
