Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the old RC Cola Bottling Plant on the east side of Baltimore, in what is known as the "Greektown" section of the city. This was shot two floors above my studio space in the building.

Time

This was probably 2 or 3 pm in the afternoon.

Lighting

This was all natural light coming in from the window behind the model. One of my studio partners was holding a silver reflector on the camera left side.

Equipment

I shot this with a Nikon D300 with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens.

Inspiration

This is one of several images from a brief, 30 minute shoot with Ryan after a workshop earlier that day. For me, what makes the image was the wind catching that strand of hair.

Editing

I processed the image in Nik's Silver Efex Pro2. I enhanced the texture of the brick to contrast with Ryan's smooth skin.

In my camera bag

Now, I Shoot with a Fujifilm XT-1 and XE-2, with a 50-140 mm f2.8 lens. I also use the 18-55 f2.8-4 zoom, as well as 35mm f1.4 and 56 mm f1.2 prime lenses.

Feedback

Putting the sun behind your subject, and then either reflecting light back or using a flash, will give you a natural rim light. Placing the model in an open shade environment will help to soften the light and make the shadows more pleasing.
