Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Djuma Lodge, Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa

Time

We tracked this beautiful leopard from sunset until she was almost impossible to locate in the bush once darkness set in. Then all of a sudden she appeared directly in front of us.

Lighting

I am very reluctant to use flash or bright lights when following game at night. This picture was captured using the vehicles single hand held spotlight and no extra flash or floods on the camera.

Equipment

Having the new Canon 5D mk iv with it's excellent low light capabilities is certainly an advantage. I shot this using Canon 100-400 mk ii lens. The exposure was 1/200 sec at f/4.5 @ 2400 ISO

Inspiration

I am a lover of all big cats in the wild especially leopard. Sabi Sands in South Africa is well known for lion and leopard and I have been back on numerous occasions and never been disappointed. I usually come back with quite a few good photographs.

Editing

I use Adobe Lightroom and try to do as little post processing as possible. Having come from the old school of film photography, I try not to do any tricks or fiddling in post. I prefer to see the image as captured. In this example, the only thing I did was some cropping and a slight colour temperature change to accomodate the spotlight.

In my camera bag

I am a Canon person. I usually have 2 bodies, namely the magnificent 5D mk iv full frame. The trusted 7D mk ii crop sensor, a 24-70 f/2.8, the Canon 100-400 mk ii and a 18-135 IS STM general purpose lens. I carry a beanbag, Manfrotto tripod, and lots of fast CF cards

Feedback

In the wild it is best to be patient. You cannot expect to arrive in the reserve and straight away see "the big 5." You can go for days without getting decent animal sightings or opportunities for great pictures. Time and patience and knowing your equipment is paramount
