Great lighting. Not sure how the smoke comes from what appears to be an unlit cigarette.

Behind The Lens
Location
Taken backstage before my school play began. As an A-level student I take shots whenever and wherever I get the chance.Time
It was taken in the evening whilst the actors were getting ready for the show.Lighting
The stage lighting made it a little difficuly, however, my single speedlight and a narrow aperture did the trick, allowing me to shut out all that badness.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon d3300 and Nikon 50mm f1.8G, the speedlight I used was a nikon sb700 with neewer triggers and an unbranded umbrella.Inspiration
I am friends with one of the students organising it and he was telling me about his costume...This just got my brain wirring and it wasn't long before I had a list of actors/characters I wanted to shoot.Editing
This required adding contrast and due to the locality, removing the busy background in photoshop. In my camera bag
I usually carry my nikon d3300 and a nikon f3. My lenses consist of a sigma 18-35f1.8...this is my only zoom lens due to my tight student budget but it is by far my favourite due to the flexibility and quality. The rest are...a 50mm f1.8G, samyang 85mm f1.4, nikon 50mm f1.4ai and a nikon 200mm f4Q.Feedback
Photographing actors is easy, they know how to emote. So you don't pose, you direct. You can get to know their character beforehand and in doing so, learn how to direct that person.
