Location
This shot was taken from a boat that sailed around the Bund and the Pearl in Shanghai.Time
The harbor in Shanghai is often shrouded in dense fog. On this clear night, I took to the sea with my camera and shot this at night.Lighting
Night shots always fascinate me because of the lighting. Without proper metering, it's easy to get underexposed images. I wanted to capture all the glimmer on the Pearl and the colors reflecting off the water.Equipment
I had all my cameras with me that night but I forgot my tripod. I huddled around a beam on the boat to help stabilize my shot. I had a wide angle lens but I didn't want too much distortion so I zoomed in a slight bit.Inspiration
Night time is magical in a lot of cities in China. The buildings use extensive lighting to put on a show every night. Without using a video, I wanted to capture the night lights on a still shot.Editing
No post-processing needed. In my camera bag
I mostly carry my Panasonic Lumix with a Leica lens with a moderate zoom and a vintage Cullman tripod. But sometimes, I have my GoPro for the ultra-wide shots.Feedback
Fog is your worst enemy when it comes to night shots. When travelling to a destination when time is limited, try to catch it on a clear night.
