Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a heavy horse show in a village not too far from my home in Kent, England.

Time

It was mid afternoon I think, I had been taking some candids from around the main display field and the show was quite a busy affair. When I saw a few horses working the fields I had to move quickly to get a decent, clear background and field of view as I wanted it. It was a one take opportunity.

Lighting

The clouds and cropped fields gave great balance between softness and harsh sharp lines and the weather was fair so there was good clarity and depth of field beyond the working horse in the foreground to the hills beyond.

Equipment

I was travelling light as it was a family trip, so just my camera, no tripod or flash or mix of lenses.

Inspiration

Something about the horse and worker in that environment just seemed timeless to me and in that moment to me it captured a still, calm yet focused purpose, a connection with animal and nature that seems far removed from modern life.

Editing

I do light editing on my photos as I shoot raw files, mainly through Adobe Lightroom. No manipulation, more tweaks and finessing as I try to capture what I see in camera. For this shot I chose black and white as the composition and detail of the sky landscape and horse just leapt out to me for this kind of style, and the tradition of a bygone era also spoke to this treatment.

In my camera bag

I like to travel light so camera and a few lenses and spare battery will suffice on a walkabout, but it depends on the work. For portrait or corporate commissions I will bring flashes, stands, tripods, reflectors, variety of lenses, spares, chargers and an assistant can be useful too.

Feedback

Be ready for anything, even in the most mundane or routine settings, that way you can challenge yourself and see things with a fresh perspective and have a chance of capturing something a bit special . That and make sure your battery is charged.
