New Orleans reveres the dead. The passing of loved ones is honored in spirited 'homegoing' celebrations to burial in elaborate above-ground tombs (mainly because the city is below sea level) to second line processions that erupt from mournful dirges into impetuous dancing in the streets. El Dia de los Muertos builds on this tradition.
