Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Oslo, Norway, by a lake called Steinbruvannet.

Time

I got up early one morning to grab some shots of this old stone house by a lake with the sun rising behind it. I found my composition and set up the camera on a tripod and just began waiting for the light to be right. It never really turned out the way I hoped, tho I did get a nice image. As the sun rose over the horizon I sent up my drone and just began exploring the surrounding area for some nice perspectives. This was one of them as the sun gave the tree tops a morning kiss of light.

Lighting

I'll shoot pretty much under any light condition, but with early/late golden hour light you can pretty much point your camera anywhere and get nice shot, so I naturally prefer to shoot during those times. Overcast and foggy days are nice also.

Equipment

For this shot I used my DJI Phantom 4

Inspiration

I've always loved the perspective a drone gives from above. So it was only natural for me to hover over trees and try to find the right composition.

Editing

I always post process my photos. For the ones I really love I'll give them a quick round in Lightroom to adjust the RAW file before I send them into Photoshop for more specific and localized retouching. I also sent this file through Nik collection's Color Efex Pro to really give it some tonal contrast on the tree tops where the sun hit the trees.

In my camera bag

I always have my Sony a7 with the 14mm and 35mm 2.8, and the DJI Phantom 4. I'll usually stick my tripod and some extras like filters and remotes if I end up setting up my camera for a specific shot for sunset or sunrise.

Feedback

Just get up for sunrise and point your camera at something you like. You won't regret it, especially if you get a spectacular sunrise.
