Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot was taken in my house in a dark room with the window open. It was taken for my photography class as a weekly photo submission. It features my sister who is my usual model for my photos.

Time

This is probably one of the best images I took for my class. It was taken after school on a Tuesday afternoon when the sun was just at the right angle to shine right into the room. I remember having to smash a piece of mirror to get the perfect piece for the photo. After the photo was taken I didn't really like the photo that much, but after doing some editting to it, it quickly became one of my favourites.

Lighting

At first the lighting wasn't that nice in the room with the blinds open, but after I got playing around with the angle of the mirror and the way that my sister was looking into it, I was able to see that having the mirror facing away from the window created the nicest light. Then after I did some editting to make the wall in the background seem darker it automatically made everything fall into place and the lighting became perfect.

Equipment

This photo was shot on a Canon T2i with a 18mm-55mm f/3.5 lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Well this photo was taken for a weekly school project and the theme for that week was reflections so I asked my sister if she would help me with it and we broke the mirror and just experimented with it until I got a photo that I thought would work and edited it until I thought it was perfect.

Editing

After the photo was taken it was a little on the bright side. Well I was editting it I decided to bring the colours in the background a little darker and to up the contrast. After I did that I added a filter to the photo to bright out the colour of my sister's eyes.

In my camera bag

Usually I just carry around my camera which is a Canon T5i and an 18mm-55mm lens with me because I tend to use them the most, but if I have a pre planned photo that requires a different lens, than I will usually bring that specific lens also. I will also carry around and props that I may need for the photo.

Feedback

If you are trying to capture something similar to this, than I would recommend just trying to take multiple shots in many different places and angles. The more photos that you take the more likely you are to get one that is bound to be one that you will like. Also that having your subject face towards the light source instead of having your subject in front of it will stop unwanted shadows and silhouettes.
