Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a trip down to Alabama. My uncle is a photographer so we planned to do a shoot together. This was the first shoot I had ever done outside of school. I am mostly a self taught photographer.

Time

It was taken in the afternoon in this little tiny abandoned one room church down the road from my uncle's apartment. The model we were shooting with lived a few hours away so we weren't able to do it too early in the morning.

Lighting

We took this right by a window, but we also had some lights with us set up. It was a combination of natural and studio light. The building was rather dark despite all the windows so we had to use some studio lights. Normally I prefer to shoot with all natural light.

Equipment

This was shot using a Nikon D7100 with a sigma 15-70mm f/2.8-4 lens.

Inspiration

Being an artist in addition to being a photographer, I wanted to take a really artistic photo. We looked to Pinterest to get some ideas planned out. This was the main image we wanted to take during this shoot. Once we knew what kind of feel we wanted to get we went out in search of the dress. We were getting ready to go out and buy a mirror to break for this shoot, when we conveniently found a perfectly broken mirror in the corner of the old church. It had been tapped together and then shattered as if it had already been used for a photography shoot. So we took on of the pieces from the mirror and saved it to use for this shoot.

Editing

What makes this picture great is all the post processing. This is actually two pictures photoshopped together. First I took a picture of the model straight one against the wall. Then I had her hold the mirror in several positions until I got the shot I wanted. I then opened both photos in photoshop and placed the image of her straight on into the mirror by using a layer mask. To make it look more real, I made sure to keep the broken edges of the mirror as is and then add shadows under her fingers. This model also happened to have several large tattoos on her arms and chest and several face piercings which didn't fit the feel I wanted to capture with this piece, so I made the executive decision to edit them all out.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D7100 usually with the default AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm f/35-5.6 lens on and I always have my AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens in the bag. Other than that, I have a 32gb SD card in my camera and a backup 8gb SD card in my bag. Then I usually have my battery charger inside and my tripod attached to the outside of the bag.

Feedback

You have to be really good with using photoshop to pull this off. It took a long time to piece the two images together and get it to look somewhat realistic.`
