Went for a drive in the country and saw this tree I had to have the photo

I received my new Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens and was desperate to shoot something to try it out and this is what I got.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Denali National Park some of the most beautiful scenery I have experienced in my life to this day.

Time

We were on a bus tour we had done an 12 hour trip to the back of the park and had seen some of the most amazing scenery possible this was the bonus to the end of the day. I am not sure what time of day it was I think around 6pm time in September I know we were one of the last tours through before the park become open to Lottery winners as we passed one keen winner in their car on the way out.

Lighting

The soft lighting of the evening coming made the native flora and fauna pop.

Equipment

Pentax K-3 with a 55-300WR all hand held through the window from the back of a tour bus.

Inspiration

As you can see for yourself what a spectacular animal in a a kaleidescope of colour.

Editing

Just a little cropping and a little mucking around with shadow and white balance otherwise what you see is what you get.

In my camera bag

My equipment has changed somewhat over the years. This photo was taken at the very beginning of me getting to know how to use a DSLR. I would love to return to Alaska knowing what I know now about photography. I normally have a two bodies this K-3 that took the picture still years later and my K-1ii usually with a 15-30 and a 150-450mm. Some spare batteries and a lens cloth and that is about it unless I am travelling then the 15-30 gets changed to a 24-70mm and you can add a charger and a ipad to the bag :) and a spare wireless hard drive to back up the photos and a barrage of spare sd cards.

Feedback

In this case luck of the draw which is not what budding photographers want to hear. Listen to the locals and tour companies about where you can find these things they make their money off knowing about their environment. Then be willing to travel and sometimes that means spending money to get what you want. Research the time of year you are going sometimes it is busy and then sometimes it quietens down. I would without a doubt go in September again the colours were spectacular and the Northern Lights were firing up and it was relatively quiet as it was the final tour through. That was more good luck than good management for us but now we know what we can expect we will be back again.
