Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture at an old mining site at Heathcote, which is a small rural town and known dark sky spot in country Victoria.

Time

From memory this was at around midnight. As my partner and friends headed to bed I suited up and drove out to this site through all the kangaroos which wander into town at night. Very spooky.

Lighting

This was the standard wide field exposure and I painted the cliffs with my headlamp very quickly.

Equipment

Shot with my trusty workhorse Canon 5D3 and a 14mm 2.8 Samyang lens set low to the ground on my Vanguard tripod.

Inspiration

I love the stars and Milky Way and am always looking to capture them differently and better each time. I chose this weekend specifically to travel into the country as it was a new moon and the milky way would be clearer.

Editing

There's a bit of color correction,noise reduction and contrast enhancement. I target the dust lanes specifically to bring it out more.

In my camera bag

Always have my 5D3 and 24-105mm F lens. Then an 85mm for portraits and the Samyang for potential night sky shots.

Feedback

Three essential items to have with an SLR. 1 - fast wide angle lens, at least 2.8 and 16mm (the milky way is huge) 2 - good sturdy tripod. 3 - most importantly a good low light pollution spot. The further away from any city the better. There's a few great light pollution maps that can be found online.
