An after school trip to Target with Umbrella Girl. She prefers the lower entrance so she can take the "xscalator" <-- as she says!Time
A rainy afternoon made for a perfect indoor adventure at Target. As we got out of the car she asked if she could bring her umbrella inside. As we walked in she kept her umbrella open and stepped on the escalator. It was too precious not to capture.Lighting
The beauty of florescent light. Just kidding! It's your typical Target lighting...leaving much to be desired. But in this photo I love how the brightness of the store lighting at the top of the escalator is blown-out, in contrast to the overhang above the escalator bringing a darker, moodier presence to the lower half of the photo.Equipment
Dare I say, I did not use my "baby" - my 17 year old Canon Rebel with my 23 year old lens. I must mention that I do still have my 23 year old Canon Rebel FILM body that was a gift (changed my life!) from my parents at age 13. No, I did not use my "baby", I captured this quickly with my cell phone! Don't hate me!Inspiration
As she stepped onto the escalator with those little feet and quietly held her umbrella it was a moment to capture...and quickly - the escalator isn't going to stop for a photo op! So I whipped out my "camera" and there you have it. I truly lucked out that she was the only one on the escalator. The solitude of a little girl and her umbrella is a sweet moment.Editing
My usual art photography is based on textures and contrast, with a love for graphic black and white imagery. It was fun to adjust the levels and saturation in this photo to pull out the texture and pattern of the escalator stairs along with her dark shirt and hair contrasting the silver-white sides of the escalator, making the umbrella pop. On of my favorite parts of this photo, besides HER, is the pattern of the stairs. The lines draw your eye up, the pattern repeats, the lighter rectangular shapes contrast the dark sides of the stairs, and the silver-white sides lift you up the escalator right along with her.In my camera bag
In this case, purse...and you don't want to know what's in that. ;) BUT in my camera bag, I always have my Canon Rebel, EFS 18-55 mm lens, 58 mm UV filter, EF 80-200 mm lens, Sunpak flash, and of course the battery charger + extra batteries!Feedback
Slow down and look at the everyday things. Take time to enjoy the little things. The simplicity of a girl and an umbrella can be art.
