The Gateway Arch of St. Louis was built to commemorate the westward expansion of the United States from the Louisiana Purchase. It stands near the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The futuristic architecture invites one to contemplate that the monument also represents our yearning to travel upward - whether by plane or rocket - to the sky and the space above. The sky is no longer the limit to where we may go.
