Behind The Lens

Location

They got married in a little town in Colorado called Black Forest, and when we woke up on her wedding day, it was the most beautiful snow I'd ever seen! The trees in the forest were just covered with snow! It was really cold out, but we braved the elements and I got the most beautiful images of her and her husband.

Time

We took the pictures in the early to late afternoon since the wedding was in the evening. I believe this image was taken around 4pm.

Lighting

Shooting in snow can be great or awful due to the reflection of the snow. Since it wasn't a particularly sunny day, I had just the right lighting and the reflecting snow was perfect!

Equipment

Canon 6D camera, Canon 70-200mm, 2.8 IS lens. No flash, no tripod.

Inspiration

I have always wanted to shoot a bridal couple in the snow and this was the perfect couple and day to do it. The couple spends a great deal of time outdoors and so it was natural to want to shoot outdoors. They were married in this beautiful forest, surrounded by trees that were flocked with snow. The bride was getting cold, and so the groom offered her his jacket since we were walking back to the car. When she put it on, I knew I had to get a few images with her in his coat because that is just the type of relationship they had---he is always taking care of her.

Editing

Very little post-processing, as I recall. I start out with RAW files, take into ACR, correct WB, pull up the exposure a bit. Pull out shadows as necessary. Adjust the Whites and just a little tweaking here and there....nothing major since I try to get most of it correct in camera. I try to always get as much correct in camera as I can so I don't have to do a lot of post processing. Add a little sharpening and I'm done!

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 6D and the Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS lens rarely leaves the camera! I also have a 50mm and 85mm lens as well as a 17-40mm lens. I rarely use flash unless it's a necessity. I much prefer to shoot without flash or just a reflector. I do have a Rogue Flashbender for my flash in case I do need to use it. I prefer for my portraits to look natural and not flashy. I carry a ton of batteries and memory cards as well.

Feedback

When shooting in snow, you really have to watch your exposure! This is especially true when shooting a white wedding dress against the white snow. It is very easy to lose the bottom of the dress and not be able to tell where the dress ends and the snow begins. Exposure is very important. I try to underexpose just a hair so that I can always bring the shadows up and/or exposure up just a bit in post. The advantage to shooting in the snow is it is a great big reflector so you can shoot under trees or out in the open if the sun is not too bright.
