Behind The Lens

Location

Took this picture in the Museum of Welsh Life in St Fagans near Cardiff in South Wales UK.This is a huge site where historical buildings that have been found around Wales in various state of repair or threat of being demolished are dismantled and then brought to St Fagans and re-constructed and therefore protect the architectural heritage. There are various buildings on the site from churches to barns e.t.c.The picture was taken in an 18th century farmhouse

Time

Picture was taken late morning at around 11am

Lighting

The inside of the farmhouse was only lit by firelight and a bit of a wet grey day outside .The room the photo was taken in was the bedroom of the farmhouse and quite small and dark

Equipment

I used an Olympus evolt500,I had only just started out with "proper" photography and had purchased this camera rather cheaply second hand so that I could find out if I would take to photography and at the same time get practising lol.I have since upgraded to a Nikon D7100 so the trial did prove a success.Although I knew the effect I wanted to achieve I took my first shot with a flash but found that was certainly too bright so off it went!

Inspiration

I'd previously visited this area and had taken a picture of the window of this farmhouse from the outside,it had a plant growing near to the window and the effect in black and white looked really effective. This shot is also in my viewbug portfolio. When I looked at the photo I could see that there was something more I could do and my initial plan was to return with a teddy bear and take a picture with the teddy bear looking through the window from the outside, don't even ask why a teddy bear sprang to mind!lol.I found the outside shot didn't work and didn't reflect the image that I had in my mind, so I looked at the window from the inside ,put the teddy on the ledge and instantly knew that if I could take the right shot that this was exactly what I wanted

Editing

The original picture was in colour so I converted it to black and white and played a bit with contrast, brightness and a little cropping

In my camera bag

Now I have replaced my Olympus I now have a Nikon D7100,a Nikon 18-55mm lens and a Tamron 70-300mm lens.I also take some neutral density filters and polarizing filters and of course the obligatory spare batteries,sd cards and cleaning kit

Feedback

Probably I would say "never settle",I quite often find I re-visit the site of an original photo as once I have had time to study it I see that there is something more that can be done to make it even better.Once there don't be afraid to take a number of shots with different settings and angles so that you can achieve exactly what you desire
