Location
This image was taken in Steveston, BC, a historic fishing village south of Vancouver. I saw a group of people lining up on the dock with their fishing gear. It was hard not to notice because everyone was talking to each other just as hundreds of ducks were quacking on the background lol.Time
I had just moved to Steveston, BC and decided to explore the village one morning. This was taken at sunrise one wintry morning in January 2014.Lighting
I am very conscious of light quality and direction when taking photos and I knew there was no way to get in front of these fishermen so I decided to take the shot backlit and at a lower angle to accentuate the shadows. I intentionally positioned the sun to get enough flare without washing out the subjects.Equipment
This was shot with an IPHONE 5S handlheld and on my knees on the dock :)Inspiration
I love taking pictures on my phone. This scene presented itself to me and like I described above, i was fascinated with what they were doing and my own curiosity led me to get closer. I walked around and found this composition. I liked the way these gentlemen were lined up and how the clouds, the sun and shadows added drama to my composition. I was also new to the area and I wanted to share photos of where I live to my family and friends.Editing
All adjustments were made using the Snapseed app on my iphone, I aligned the horizon, adjusted the contrast and sharpness. In my camera bag
My iphone! I take pictures with my iphone constantly. I find inspiration in many things even though my main interest is nature and landscape. With the iphone, taking silhouettes is quite easy because its sensor easily meters for backlit subjects. When I know I have time after work or on weekends, I will bring my backpack with my Canon gear with me.Feedback
Just keep shooting. There is no excuse as everyone can take photos with a mobile device. My advise would be to treat it as a regular camera when taking images and your mindset would completely change. I have spent quite some time learning how to shoot with my iphone (exposure compensation, af/ae lock, remote shutter, using a gorillapod, etc) and I encourage everyone to do the same. I am really just an amateur photographer and like many, do it for the love of photography. I guess I am also a frustrated artist (lol) and I find photography as a creative outlet. I still have a lot to learn but I never cease to go out there and practice the skills and techniques I learn from the web. Viewbug has opened a whole new world for me and I am constantly inspired by the work and support of the members in this community. Like the great Wayne Gretzky would say - "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." So let us all go out there every day and make each moment count - making images of the things, places and people we love. Take care everyone :)
