Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Fort Lytton Army Barracks. I love this area of Brisbane as it has so much atmosphere and beautiful texture.

Time

The image was taken early in the morning to capture the morning light. I wanted to create a definate mood for this image and natural light was perfect for it. There are three windows to camera left that are letting in just enough light. Outside it was pouring with rain which only added to the atmosphere.

Lighting

I wanted to create a dark sad mood with the lighting for this image. I chose to take it using the early morning light that comes gently through the windows giving just eneough to create the required mood.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 6D with a 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 lens, remote trigger, and a ladder.

Inspiration

I was looking for a place to complete an assignment for my photoimaging course, when I stumbled across this gorgeous area that had everything I was looking for. My assignment was to create peices that meant something to me. I chose to create images that showed my struggle with depression.

Editing

I did alot of post processing with this image. In total there are four images combined, the empty room to get the atmosphere, two images for each leg hanging and the fourth was to get the tension in the rope an my hands. I have also created dust layers and texture layers. I absolutley love the process of starting with an idea and making this come alive through photography and photoshop.

In my camera bag

I have my camera and my 28-135mm lens on me at all times, its almost like an extra limb at this point. In my bag is my nifty fifty, 75-300mm, reflector, light meter and grey card. This is basically my whole kit excluding my lights, I have my wish list of equipment, as I am sure everyone has and dream of being able to afford them ????

Feedback

My advice would be to have fun when you are creating. This shoot felt fantastic the entire time I was shooting. I started to stress when it began to rain and thought it would ruin the shot, however it ended up being of great value. Always be aware of the light and the mood you are trying to create, and lastly, you dont need the most expensive camera or lens to be able to take amazing images.
