Behind The Lens

Location

My girlfriend Becky and I flew to Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro and tagged a four day safari in the Serengeti, onto the end. We climbed Kili via the Lemosho route and made it to the top successfully; I also proposed at the top and she said yes!!! The photo was taken in October in the Serengeti, Africa.

Time

We slept over night, under canvas, woke to a beautiful October morning, sun was beaming across the camp. We had a paid for a private driver called Nafta, who was driving us through the Serengeti, Africa, to all the spots he knew, to try and get great shots. He had already found us some beautiful animals to see, but then he got a call on the CB radio, from another driver, and advised us he had a treat in store for us. It was just after lunch, and he had to take us off the official paths, and across the grass plains, to where some other jeeps already were. At first there were only 3 Cheetahs on the mound of earth, and we only had a sideways view, as we waited out turn to drive round to see them front on. As we slowly edged our way round to the front, I saw a 4th adult slowly walking towards the group that were already there. Nafta said we had to leave very shortly, and as we did, the 4th one joined the group at the bottom. At first they were not looking at me, so I took a risk and whistled. They all turned and I managed to take two photo's, one shot was this one and the other, one of the Cheetahs had their eyes closed. I knew I had the shot of the trip, when I looked at the screen on the camera.

Lighting

The Serengeti is so bright, you have an amazing amount of light to play with, so you can keep the camera on ISO100 and the shutter speed can be fairly fast. Just make sure the sun is behind you!

Equipment

I used a Canon 70d, with a sigma 18-250 lens. I wish I had a better lens with me for the shot; maybe next time!

Inspiration

I love photo's of wild animals, having the patients to wait and capture that moment, that could be the photo of a life time. A memory to keep forever. When I knew we wanted to climb Kilimanjaro, it seems the perfect chance, while in that part of Africa, to tag a safari onto the end of it. We were not disappointed!

Editing

I did some basic post editing in some basic software to bring out the colours, contrast and shadows. I have since bought Lightroom, and I think I now have a better version than the one uploaded on Viewbug.

In my camera bag

I always carry a full tripod, which is must for night photography and landscapes. I enjoy night photography, and looking forward to trying to capture a great milkyway shot one day. I use a Canon 70d, a Sigma 18-250 lens, which is a great all rounder for travelling. A Tokina 11-16 f2.8, which is great for landscape shots. A wired remote, spare battery and a couple of mini tripods also. Plus, my GoPro camera as well.

Feedback

With animal shots, it's having the patience to wait for them to do something, other than just sitting there looking at something. Waiting for them to yawn, growl, lick, touch, fight, play or whatever it is you want to capture. Sitting there patiently waiting for the perfect shot.
