Thanks to all who have commented on and liked this photo or given it a peer award. Due to the number of views and likes/awards the photo was recommended for a Behind The Lens review. I have recently submitted several other photos taken in the last few years, as I have not been anywhere that actually inspired me to take photos.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on what is classified as the edge of green belt land.

Time

Evening

Lighting

I did not use artificial lighting or a flash. The weather was warm but clouds were slowly drifting in on the breeze and obscuring the sunset.

Equipment

A digital camera function on an iPod and no other equipment, such as a zoom lens, tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I was performing a few chores, winding down after a day of looking at properties to rent and starting other tasks, when I saw the unfolding sunset. As I was in a late spring/early summer type of scenario, the daylight hours were longer and sunsets were too. I loved the languid progression of the darkening clouds as the sun dipped below the horizon and the light was reflected plus absorbed through them. Clouds always make a sunset more dramatic and this photo makes it seem as if they are ablaze.

Editing

I took a few photos over a ten minute period, to see if the pattern on the clouds would change, but the location and the sun setting in the far right (east) of the image meant that darkness quickly took over; the red, orange and yellow hues were over shadowed by the purple and blue colours.

In my camera bag

A few phone/digital cameras while out and about as the era for carrying bulky, heavy digital/photographic film cameras (unless you are a professional photographer or work in the industry), has passed. I still have simple and larger cameras for when I want to capture an image that can't be manipulated and therefore needs to be processed from photographic negatives.

Feedback

The scene in this photo, despite it's uniqueness lasted more than 5 minutes and it's beauty can be seen almost everyday from different locations, at different times, around the whole world. Patience, perseverance and a bit of luck will get you a better if not similar photo. I have seen much better sunset and sunrise photographs than mine, so use your location wisely to obtain a silhouette to use as the foreground of your main subject; the background!
