Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a small village in Bali back in 2013. I was a bit tired and sat down outside under the shadow of a tree. There were a couple of man there and we started to "talk". The point to my camera and I show them some photos I took before. Then I invited them a tea and when they were leaving I asked Wayan to let me take his photo. I loved his expression and I am sure I would not get it if I didn´t got to meet him and talk to him before.

Time

Opposite to what you may think, this photo was taken outside with a bright blue sky on the background. Since I loved his expression I decided to make it more like a "studio taken photo" with post processing.

Lighting

All of it was natural light. I was just starting in photography (actually, I was attending a documentary photography workshop by the amazing photographer Sebastian Suki Belaustegui) and I took this one during some free time we had.

Equipment

I shoot it with a Nikon D7000 with a 18-105mm lens f/3.5-5.6 handheld.

Inspiration

I wanted a memory of our afternoon together and I loved his face.

Editing

Yes, I was also starting to learn post-processing and I followed a YouTube tutorial of the Dragan Technique since I wanted something really dramatic. It really worked out for this photo!

In my camera bag

Since I do a lot of travel photography I have a Nikon D850 with a Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6, I know is not one of the "big lenses" but is very versatile and light. I also carry a 18-35mm for my wide angle shots, I like it because is light ands it takes filter that can be screw into the lens. I also carry a polarizer filter and a variable ND filter. If I know I will need a flash I take my Godox AD200 or my Godox 860. If I know I will be out for some astrophotography I take my two Rokinons: 24mm f/1.4 and 14mm f/2.8. Extra batteries, extra cards and a light carbon fiber tripod are a must in my line of photography too.

Feedback

I got two big lessons from this photographer: 1- Get to know your subject even if you know it is not your subject yet. Be kind if somebody come and ask you about your photography and take a little time to know them. A smile and a right attitude can take you far even if you don´t speak the same language. 2- Even if you are resting and relaxing, keep the camera nearby. Wayan was literally leaving when I took his photo and the moment may be gone if I had to look for it under my bag and get all the settings done. 3- Keep practicing and get better. I did that, and even I still have a lot to learn, I have to do much less post-processing to my photos nowadays. Keep shooting!
