Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Brisbane, Australia. We did the shoot in my makeup stylist's home ,in her living room actually.

Time

We got all prepped up in the morning and started to shoot probably around midday. I closed all the windows by just tapping bed sheets to cut out as much natural light as possible.

Lighting

. I did a lot of trails and errors to get the light shooting the direction I had in mind. I actually used baking paper and loads of sticky tape to make snoots over my speed lights.I don't have snoots so it took time but I just really wanted to make it work .

Equipment

I used a Nikon D610 , 2 Yongnuo speed lights and White Baking paper as my snoots and to soften my lights .

Inspiration

The lighting was inspired by an old film a friend of mine just watched couple weeks before the shoot. There was some intimate scenes between two lovers and the light would only reach some parts of the female body giving some sexy mystery . It was very beautiful and I loved the deep shadows and highlights on her skin shaping her body so sensually

Editing

I did some post processing . I only turned the image to black and white as the movie was. A little bit adjustment on the curves to give it more pop. Her skin is very shinny because we added loads of glitter we got from the art and craft shop . Rubbed good handful of coconut body oil on her skin before applying the glitter .

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D610 and Nikon D7000 . 50mm 1.8 , Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 and 25-85mm 3.5 nikkor as my main lens I use. Have 3 Yongnuo speed lights .One is the high speed 568ex. Grey card, Sekonic L-308s light meter . Few umbrellas and softboxes and my DIY beauty dish I made from my salad bowl (which I totally love!)

Feedback

My advice is when you have the passion and drive to create and you don't have the gear you can learn to work with what you have to still create . It then becomes a learning journey and you understand from the errors how light becomes and plays with things you use. For example, baking paper ! I folded it and shaped it to direct my light where I needed it . It costed me $3 and I love the image more because I created it through it and it makes it more unique to me.
