Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was in my parents' bedroom near a side door that was letting in a lot of light.

Time

It was probably about 4 in the afternoon, on a fairly boring day. I had gotten home from school and picked a flower as I went inside.

Lighting

At the time I took this I wasn't really knowledgeable about camera settings, but knew that the light by the window was going to work in my favor. Cats move quickly and I knew I needed the speed that light offered me.

Equipment

I shot this with a Nikon D5100 with the kit lens. Tripods and a longer lens wouldn't have worked with the confined space and cat.

Inspiration

To be honest I was trying to irritate my cat at first, but then I realized how pretty she'd look if she carried the flower in her mouth. Looking up was her ignoring my flower.

Editing

I played around with the colors a little, but for the most part I hardly touched it.

In my camera bag

I'm a college student that doesn't have a job so my equipment is on the cheaper side. I have a 50mm f 1.8 Nikon lens and a 70-300 lens from Tamron. I have a speed light from Altura and a 5 in one reflector as well.

Feedback

Patience is key. Animals work on entirely their own scedule and the more you mess with them the less likely they are to cooperate with you. Let's face it, they have no idea what you want or what you're even doing so be gentle and understanding. Unless you're lucky you'll be waiting around for a while to get the perfect shot. I'd say a fast shutter speed is the second most important thing.
