Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at an International Show Jumping event just outside Cavan Town in Ireland.

Time

This was a very exciting day as it was my step daughters' chance to compete at the young riders championships. The photograph was taken early morning, indoors from the side of the warm up arena.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the calm before the storm, the focused, nervous moments before entering a competitive arena. The lighting, as it was an indoors venue, was a mixture of fluorescent and natural lighting.

Equipment

All I had with me to capture this shot was my Canon Rebel 1100D with a 250mm lens. No tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture a very special moment for my step daughter and her horse. It was their first young riders competition together and I wanted to immortalise that moment forever. I tried to avoid an uncomfortable, set up shot. I wanted to capture the horses stunning musculature, Rebecca's pony tail down her back mirrored his tail. I snapped them mid-term, facing the candelabras hanging from the ceiling which reminded me of the bulbs around a dressing room mirror. It's as if the pair of them are heading in the direction of 'ShowTime' which would also suit as a title for the photograph.

Editing

This was a digital photograph so there was no dark rooms involved! I didn't even crop the photograph, though I did remove a logo on the horses' saddle cloth to avoid any copyright issues.

In my camera bag

I like to set my self challenges, whether it be with my photography subjects or equipment. I basically use what I have at my disposal to the best of my ability (obviously I'd love the opportunity to work with some of the top of the range models!) I have a small rucksack with a lightweight, travel tripod strapped to the side. Inside my bag you'll find a Canon Rebel 1100D with a 70-250mm lens and a 50mm Prime lens. I also have a remote shutter release cable and tulip lens hood. I love macro photography too, so a macro lens would be first on my wish list.

Feedback

If you have the tricky task of trying to capture a moving subject under fluorescent light, especially if you've only one or two chances to capture the action of a specific subject, arrive early, practise taking photographs, as I did, with other horses and riders under the same conditions. I was able to go through all my settings, aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc until my photographs were technically good. Only then was I ready to take the intended photograph.
