So this image was captured in Japan whilst on on holiday back in 2013, I was over there for about 2 week soaking up the wonderful culture and atmosphere that Japan has to offer. Each day i would get up and and wander around the local streets well away from tourist areas and take a look at normal daily life for Japanese people. This was much more interesting than just visiting all the tourist hot spots that everyone else goes to and would lead to meeting and talking with some wonderful characters as people always want to have a chat with the random westerner wandering around where there generally aren't westerners.Time
This shot was done early in the evening on November 28th I was on a photo walk with a local photographer that i had met through a meetup.com meeting the week before. we were walking around some of the local streets in Tokyo trying to capture images from different angles such as from ground level and also shots from above when we could find good spots to get above everything.Lighting
The lighting in shit shot is all "natural" in the sense of Japan's crazy amount of neon glow and city lighting that can be found almost everywhere you go in japan.Equipment
The equipment used in this shot was a Nikon D7000 with a 35mm lens that i had just purchased the week before in Taiwan. It was actually my aim to do the whole 2 weeks in Japan with nothing but that 35mm lens on the camera to force me to be more creative with a fixed focal length.Inspiration
I guess my main inspiration behind this image and many others i took while in japan was to challenge myself at a fixed focal length, and to create something that wasn't an ordinary photo. I wanted to try and represent the feel of the street and what it's like to be in such a crazy place with all the lights and goings on in Japan, but also try to give a different perspective by lowering the camera as close to the ground as possible and getting the shot before being ran over by the traffic :)Editing
Post processing for me is done in lightroom mainly to fine tune the images and to bring out the colours of the image as i saw them, so there isn't huge amounts of processing and on average i'll only spend around 20 mins on average working on any single image. In my camera bag
So back then my Kit wasn't overly big I had my D7000 and 18-55mm lens, 55-300mm lens, a 50mm and the 35mm that i used for my whole trip through japan. however it has grown somewhat now to also include a Nikon D800 with a 24-85mm FX Lens, a prophoto speed light collapsible soft box a 75mm Lomo Diana+ lens and a few different lens filters.Feedback
To be honest the best thing you can do as a photographer or budding photographer is to experiment, use different angles and heights, try out different depth of fields and never be afraid to take lots of shots to get that right image that makes you go wow this is an amazing image. I know so many photographers that are always looking to conform to what is supposed to be a good shot or the best way to process the image. However for me it's not about that and who as an artist wants to follow the norm get out there and challenge those norms and make a name for yourself doing what you feel is good and people will love that more than the standard perfectly composed image. But to get something similar to what i have done i used a shallow DOF at f2.0 high ISO of 1600 due to being night and get down low but make sure there is something interesting going on in the background to ad some character to the image.
