Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo right in my backyard in Montana, this happens to be the location for the majority of my photo shoots.

Time

We had so much fun in this photo shoot. This was so spur of the moment, I looked out the window and saw the beautiful sunset and jumped on the opportunity. Within minutes she was in a skirt jumping around on the trampoline. We played around with this until the sun went down.

Lighting

I love playing with silhouettes and seeing what I can do with only my camera and my subject. I always love getting a good shot without using any special lighting equipment, so the only source of light was the setting sun in the background. This of course makes for an interesting struggle with camera settings, but i like the challenge.

Equipment

This was taken on a Canon 60D. No other equipment was used, unless of course you count the trampoline.

Inspiration

I love the beautiful flow and movement that a gymnast has while playing on the trampoline. It's a mixture of grace and strength that is relatively unique to the sport. I love being able to take all distractions of color, style, facial expression, etc... out of the picture. By doing this you can really focus on the grace, flow, strength, and beauty of the athlete and the fabric she is wearing.

Editing

I tried not to do too much post processing to this image. I loved just the raw natural beauty and didn't want to take away from that. I shot it in black and white, so the only processing done was some sharpening. I also played around with the blacks and whites to add some contrast. I did all of this using Lightroom 5.

In my camera bag

The only equipment that I have is my amazing Canon 60D. I would love to expand that and get some more lenses. I'm especially interested in getting some underwater equipment. But for now, it's just me and my 60D!

Feedback

Timing is everything. I spend a lot of time photographing gymnasts, and have realized with time that there is a rhythm to every little movement made, quite like a heartbeat. If you can catch that beat, taking the photo is easy.
