Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home in Georgia. Small, easy set up.

Time

I believe it was early evening. I was inside a room with blacked out windows though so outside lighting wasn't a factor.

Lighting

I made sure all windows were covered so it was as dark as possible and placed a black sheet behind me as my backdrop. I only used one light for this image! It was placed northwest from me to give a darker, shadowy look. I also applied dark makeup to keep the aesthetic.

Equipment

I used a 70D camera with an 18-200mm lens on a tripod. I had another, smaller tripod with my sigma flash sitting on top of a dresser northwest from me.

Inspiration

I've always loved dark photography and find myself being drawn to darker settings as an artist. I'm a very emotional being and have many different sides to my personality. When I started taking antidepressants my deep emotions lessened, so much so that I almost didn't have ANY feelings. I felt like a human robot. That's what I was trying to portray while creating this shot.

Editing

Yes! Post-processing is my favorite part of photography I think. Photoshop is awesome at being able to bring thoughts to life. For this particular image I used a stock photo of a robot for the left side of my face. To give it a cracked appearance as if my skin was peeling off, I used layers and layers of high resolution "cracked" photoshop brushes. From there I dodged and burned a bit to give the image more of a pop.

In my camera bag

Camera, flash, 18-200mm lens, 50mm lens, and snacks because I'm a hungry individual. :)

Feedback

My advice is to not be afraid to be uniquely yourself. Feel your feelings and bring them to life in your art, no matter how odd it may seem to others. This is especially important when creating a self portrait. There's a vulnerability in making something that brings out and exposes your innermost self to the world. Don't be afraid of it. Realizing that I'm not a cookie cutter person and actually accepting myself and using that uniqueness to my advantage was one of the most ground breaking moments that I had as an artist. Create something that showcases the essence of YOU.
