Behind The Lens

Location

I was attending a 3 day photography workshop where I met with talented people like myself including the lady in the photograph. She sat right in front of me and was having a chat with with the person right beside me.

Time

It was mid morning headed to noon and we had a small break in between the workshop. It was the perfect opportunity for some practice shots.

Lighting

I simply wanted the lighting to be as natural as possible. No flash or strobe lights. Just the natural light streaming into the room. As a photographer I always want to be able to use the my surrounding to my advantage to create that amazing shot.

Equipment

I only used a Canon powershot SX40HS which is equipped with a 4.5 -150 mm Canon zoom lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The session before this break was all about taking natural shots so I decided to try it out. The only difference before I took the shot was her eyes were looking elsewhere, so I called her name to grab her attention and did a quick snap. Believe or not our workshop mentor was utterly impressed with the results of this photo. P.S this was my 2nd week as a photographer, and for an amateur, this was truly awe-inspiring.

Editing

No. No post-processing was involved. I don't like to rely on post-processing apps for that perfect shot. Beauty is best captured in its purest form. However, if this was for editorial content then I might have taken the extra effort to post-process it.

In my camera bag

I normally travel light. Simply put my Canon powershot SX40HS camera with its fixed lens 4.5-150 mm canon zoom lens and a light weight tripod for those long exposure shots.

Feedback

I found that photography is an art of expression through pictures. I was always aim for natural shots just in the nick of time for that perfect shot. The lighting, color balance and exposure has to be set for the look and feel you want. I go with gut instinct and it always works for me. I don't like to exaggerate my shots, it will feel somewhat CGI(Computer Generated Image). And as for your subjects, try to catch them off-guard (randomly) when they are in their natural element. You'll be surprised to find that random picture will stand out more and the results will be staggering. For new photographers don't worry about expensive equipment and flashy accessories, great photography can be achieved using the most basic equipment and a good idea, or simply go by your gut instinct like I do. Obviously take into consideration the basic principles of photography: lighting, composition and be randomly creative.
