Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a pond in my home town north of Boston. Each year a pair of swans that live at this pond will raise their cygnets. At the time I captured this image four of the five were all focusing their attention in the same direction.

Time

This image was captured at approximately 6:30pm. I headed out with my family to go to see the swans and to capture some images of them. It was the perfect evening to do so.

Lighting

The sun was relatively low in the sky and behind the cygnets. I got low to the ground near the edge of the pond in order to let the sun create some rim light on their heads.

Equipment

Canon Rebel XSI with a 55-250 f/4-5.6 lens set at 250mm. No flash. Hand held.

Inspiration

I love wildlife photography and was looking forward to my first attempt at photographing swans.

Editing

Lightroom 3 was used to process the raw capture

In my camera bag

I usually have an 18-55 a 50 f/1.4 and a 55-250 lens. I have 12 and 25mm extention tubes for close up shots. and I have a 580 EX flash.

Feedback

The best advise I can think of giving is to make sure you have a passion for what you are shooting and try to visualize an image that you want. If your passion for the subject matter is great enough then you will be motivated to make it happen. There is one important tool that any photographer will need when working with wildlife...patience (to wait for the perfect moment).
