As you set out for Rome, pray the voyage is long, full of adventure, full of discovery. Don't be afraid: you won’t encounter cyclops or dragons unless you bring them along inside your soul. Rome will give you a marvelous journey. Without her, you would not have set out. She will have nothing left to give you. And if you find her ideas poor, Rome won’t have fooled you. Wise as you will have become, so full of experience and knowledge, you will have understood by then what a voyage to Rome means. (Paraphrasing 'Journey to Ithaca').
