Chesapeake Bay - Sharps Island Lighthouse - Maryland - The 3rd lighthouse at this location, this light is a "spark plug" structure, so named because of its shape. This light was constructed in 1882 with a concrete caisson foundation. It has been leaning by about 15° since it was damaged by ice in 1977, termed the Great Freeze of 1977, when the Chesapeake Bay froze solid enough to walk across it - 58 uninterrupted days of below freezing temperatures. The lean was caused by the sheer weight of the ice that had gathered on it during this unusually cold winter. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but is in poor condition.
